WhatsApp

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a free chat/phone/video application for your phone that allows you to send messages, make calls etc, using WiFi (if you’re connected) or using your phone’s data service. Of particular interest to us is the fact that it makes sending and receiving group messages very easy.

How does UBPC use WhatsApp?

Some UBPC members have been using WhatsAppfor a few months to co-ordinate and organize games. People often ask on the group if anyone is interested in playing on a certain day, and those who are interested respond and a game gets set up. The general consensus among the people who have been using it seems to be that while it’s not perfect, it’s better to have the application than not have it.

Isn’t this exactly the same as email?

Well yes, functionally, it’s the same, but it’s much more immediate, people respond much faster, and it’s easier to send a message to the group.

Will I get continuously spammed if I join this group?

As with any group forum, if people in the group start spamming, it quickly destroys the forum. So we have a one unwritten rule, and that is – keep your posts about pickleball. And people have been really good about following this. Most posts are specific and pertaining to playing at a particular time, ability to come on a particular day, etc. There is a little friendly banter which no one should find objectionable. So, no, you won’t get spammed.

What is my responsibility if I join the WhatsApp group?

If you decide to join the conversation, it is your responsibility to be an active member. If you are planning on playing pickleball at a suggested time, let people know, respond to the request.

How do I join the UBPC WhatsApp group?

  1. Install WhatsApp on your phone.
iPhone users go to the Apple Store, Android users go to the Google Play Store and search for “WhatsApp Messenger”. Once you’ve found the application, click on the “Install” button to install it.
  2. Once it’s installed, start WhatsApp on your phone by clicking the icon. The application will lead you through the setup. It will ask you to enter your phone number and set up a 4 digit PIN (use any 4 digit number that you will remember). Also It will ask you to enter your name. Use whatever name or nickname you wish, but remember that this is the name that people will see when you send a message. But please do use some name, because if you don’t then the messages you send only have your phone number on them and people don’t know who has sent the message.
  3. Open this email on your phone and click on the link below. That should add you to the UBPC group.
